Stephanie has the most enticing blog name: Inside Stephanie's Closet. Ever since I picked up The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up from Anthropologie (one of Stephanie's fav stores), my living space has gotten noticeably neater. But even back in my messy-room days, I always kept my closet perfectly organized. That's because when you love clothes, closets are sacrosanct. Being invited into a thoughtful fashionista's closet is nothing short of an act of grace.
Okay, so we didn't actually get to go into her closet - but we got to spend a lovely afternoon with Stephanie, first at Montreal's iconic Atwater Market, then for a slightly-damp stroll (it had just rained) along Canal de Lachine that she very sportingly acquiesced to, in spite of her suede Zara sandals, and finally ending up at one of those Amélie-esque cafes that Montreal specializes in - each reminiscent of the others, and yet with its own distinct personality.
Q. How would you characterize your personal style?
Because of work, I have to dress very classic. So I’ll wear all black...but my shoes will be orange or pink, something a bit flashy - always with a twist! I’m the one who wears the pink or red blazer.
Q. What are 3 of your favorite statement pieces?
A pair of strappy orange high heels from Zara, a red blazer that I love to wear with jeans. I have almost every color shoe and I love to pair them with basic jeans or black pants. There's stuff that I bought 10 years ago that I still love wearing. Sometimes I like to go casual and wear Converse with a baseball hat.
Q. What are your favorite trends right now?
I love culottes, rompers and jumpers - off-the-shoulder dresses and tops are great for summer - strappy sandals and gladiators.
Q. How does living in Montreal inspire your style?
In Montreal, people are very fashionable. Because there is so much diversity, you see inspiration everywhere. I’ve always lived in Montreal, so it’s hard to compare with other cities. I would say that Montreal has a very distinct personality.
Q. How did you start your blog?
I work in finance, but I’ve always loved fashion. Every time I’m with friends or family, I get asked, “Where did you get that?” I started Instagram-ing 2 years ago to document my style. Through reading other blogs, I was inspired to start my own and showcase my outfits. It’s everything I like at the same time: I wanted an outlet to express myself, write, and take pictures.
Q. What comes easily and what's challenging?
Everything is a bit challenging! Gaining followers is the main focus for everyone when you first start. I’m not good with computers, but I’ve managed to do everything on my own. It's definitely a lot with a full time job.
Q. What’s your strategy with time management?
I usually post once a week. It really depends on the weather! When I have time on the side, watching TV or whatever, I’ll do the writing. It’s really mainly for fun. I try to take it seriously, but not too much.
Q. Where do you see your blog in five years?
The biggest dream come true would be to do it full time: to post once a day and do it as a full time job. But mainly, I love to just creative without the pressure of performance. If it works, great - if it doesn’t, I'll just continue doing it for fun. We’ll see where it brings me.
Q. What do you like to do for fun?
Shopping! Favourite places to shop: H&M, Zara, Dynamite, and Anthropologie. I also like to shop online at shein.com and thebay.com, which is Canada’s Macy’s.
Q. Where do you get your style inspiration?
I love reading magazines in my free time. I also check out other blogs, Instagram, the internet in general. Sometimes walking around downtown, I get very inspired by seeing people’s style. My personal style is always evolving. Through blogging, I've become less shy and am not as scared of what people will think. I just wear what I love without stressing about what people will think about it. That’s what fashion is - you have to wear what you love. It’s going to show through your personality and how you feel. Fashion isn't just following trends. Just do what you like and what you’re comfortable with.
